Paediatric First Aid

Overview

The IQL Level 3 Paediatric First Aid qualification is a two-day course which covers a wide range of CPR and First Aid skills related to children and includes the Emergency Paediatric First Aid syllabus as well as also equipping the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illness.  This course will provide the learner with an IQL Paediatric First Aid qualification which is Ofqual accredited and meets the requirements of the Early Years and Child Care Register.

The Paediatric First Aid course duration is 12 hours over two days or over 4 evenings and the course comprises of practical work and theoretical classroom work, including practical assessment on CPR and first aid.  Every candidate must establish prior to commencement of training for the Paediatric First Aid qualification that they will be 16 years of age at the time of taking the assessment.

Course Content

A range of subjects are covered including:

Understanding the role of the paediatric first aider

How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock

How to assess an emergency situation and act safely and effectively

How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction

How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is wounded and bleeding

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a suspected fracture and a dislocation

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a head, a neck and a back injury

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has sustained an electric shock

How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been bitten or stung

 

Assessment

Paediatric First Aid is Trainer Assessed throughout the course and the assessment should determine a learner’s ability to act safely, promptly and effectively when an emergency occurs at work and to deal with a casualty. All Assessment Criteria in the units must be achieved.

Renewal

In order to re-qualify, learners must be assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria in the unit. For Paediatric First Aid this will be the same as the initial course of 12 hours.
