St Peter's School

OP hockey update

As 2015 neared its close Pandas returned to Harrogate for the annual fixture. The first half yielded success as we went in with a narrow lead. Alas, upon returning our general lack of fitness and  the consequence of playing younger regular hockey players told and we fell, spectacularly, to a 3-5 defeat.

Boxing Day arrived in a deluge but the game managed to survive and we had a wonderful turnout. As York HC was not able to furnish a full side we supplied them with players whilst retaining four substitutes for ourselves. What bodes well for us, though, is the youth which appeared for our side resulting in the opening 11 having Joshua Cust, at 25, as the oldest member. The pace, stamina and ability resulted in us securing an excellent 3-1 victory with captain, Ed Marsden, surprising everyone by not only passing the ball but also scoring what he termed a 'screamer'.

Into 2016 and the annual game against the School was played before a most enjoyable, and well attended, Dinner at Bedern Hall. The School has a talented team which took an early lead and extended this to 3-1 by half time. A better performance in the second half saw us keep to the two goal margin and finish going down 2-4.

We shall again be going to Skegness for the Easter festival. The Club has anticipated this event with much excitement each and every year for over 50 years. However, it is only recently that we have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century and have included girls in our collective which we do with a great deal of pleasure.  For any readers interested in taking part as a player of mens, ladies or mixed hockey please contact the Secretary, James Hepworth on we are always on the lookout for OPs with a sporting flair and a story to tell.

We would like to thank the Pandas for supplying this report.
