St Peter’s Girls’ 1st XI are set to make history this season as they enter the Tier 1 England Hockey Super League for the first time in the school’s history.
The achievement is particularly fitting in a year when St Peter’s celebrates 50 years of girls’ sport. From the introduction and development of girls’ sport at the school over the past five decades, to competing against some of the strongest school hockey programmes in the North of England, this represents an exciting new chapter in the history of St Peter’s girls’ hockey.
The Tier 1 competition provides the opportunity for the team to compete at the highest level of schoolgirls’ hockey in the North, with an eight-team league featuring some of the leading hockey schools in the region.
The St Peter’s squad will face a challenging programme of fixtures, beginning away against Denstone on 16 September, followed by RGS on 23 September. The team will then welcome Repton to St Peter’s on 7 October before travelling to GSAL in November.
There are also two exciting home fixtures before Christmas, with Solihull visiting St Peter’s on 11 November and Kirkham on 2 December. Following the Christmas break, the girls will face Scarborough at home and Sedbergh away.

We would love to see as many members of the St Peter’s community as possible supporting the girls at their home fixtures this season. Playing against the very best teams in the North will provide a fantastic opportunity for the players to test themselves, develop and showcase the quality of hockey within the St Peter’s programme.

Head of Hockey, Miss Horsfield, recognises the challenge that lies ahead but is excited about what the season can offer:
“This is a hugely exciting moment for St Peter’s girls’ hockey and a fantastic way to celebrate 50 years of girls’ sport at the school. We recognise that Tier 1 will be a significant step up in standard and that we will face some incredibly strong opposition. Our focus this season will be on the process — competing with confidence, learning from every fixture and continuing to develop as a team and as individuals. We want the girls to embrace the challenge, enjoy the experience and see just how far they can take themselves.”
The team are equally excited about the challenge ahead. 1st XI Captain Alice Sturgeon said:
“Next year the girls’ first team head to Tier 1, and I can’t wait to captain this amazing team through to the next standard of play. We are all very excited for our pre-season tournament at Rugby and ready to learn how each other play. We are also looking forward to playing new and more challenging competition.”
The season promises to be a landmark one for St Peter’s hockey. Whatever the results, competing at this level will provide invaluable experience for the players and an opportunity to continue building the programme for the future.
