St Peter's School
The Alcuin Library
Our library is named after Alcuin, the Northumbrian scholar who worked under Charlemagne and taught at St Peter's School in 750 AD.
The Library at St Peter’s provides a calm and quiet environment that encourages learning and reading for pleasure, in one of the older and most historic buildings on campus.
Staffed by a full-time chartered Librarian, the library is open six days a week and carries a stock of approximately 14,000 items in a huge variety of media.
To support pupils in their studies we offer a wide ranging collection of information and learning materials related to the curriculum, tuition for students on how to use the library and encouragement to integrate library resources into student learning.
All library materials are listed on ‘Oliver’, the Library Catalogue, which is accessible throughout the school. Pupils can request, reserve and renew items online in addition to creating search lists and consulting a variety of reading lists. The Library also subscribes to a number of electronic resources which are available via our Virtual Learning Environment iFawkes.
In order to promote the library’s key role in fostering a positive attitude to books and a genuine love of reading, we organise a variety of opportunities to engage with literature, such as author visits and book award shadowing events.
Pupil involvement in the Library is also encouraged. There is a Library Committee which is reformed annually, comprising a pupil representative from each House and a member of the teaching staff.
Pupils can also choose training in Library Skills to contribute towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Sixth Form pupils receive separate inductions, are entitled to borrow a greater number of resources, and can request items via The British Library, if appropriate, for independent studies in subjects such as History and English.
