St Peter's School
St Peter’s is a true community, with life-long membership, as shown when Lower Sixth Form pupil AJ joined Old Peterite MP Alan Mak for a week at the Houses of Parliament as part of his work experience.
AJ undertook work in support of Alan Mak’s Chairmanship of the All Party Parliamentary Group looking at the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including event planning, publicity and research.
A highlight of the week for AJ was holding discussions with leading researchers from some of the country’s most prestigious universities, who were experts in fields including agritech and the use of robotics in crime prevention and detection.
As a bonus, AJ’s placement occurred during a frantic week of Brexit voting. “The atmosphere was busy and bustling, though less tense than I thought it may have been,” AJ said.
A strong supporter of young people and his old School, Alan Mak makes frequent visits to the school. AJ first saw him speak at the School when he was in Third Form. When Alan Mak offered, earlier this year, to arrange work experience for any sixth formers interested in learning more about the operation of our political system, AJ was quick to take up the opportunity.
AJ said, “He gave us all his email address. When I contacted him, he got back straight away, asking which dates would suit. Alan is a very good speaker, genuinely interested in people and their problems, and very hardworking. It was a wonderful opportunity which I would not have had if it wasn’t for the way the Old Peterite community works with the School.”
AJ is studying for A-levels in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. Alan Mak’s visit took place as part of the School’s regular programme of Sixth Form lectures.
