St Peter's Boarder through to World Triathlon Championships

This week Ben, one of St Peter’s Lower Sixth boarders, secured his place in the World Under 20 Triathlon Championships.

At the World Championship Qualifiers in Cardiff on Sunday, Ben participated in the Sprint Distance Triathlon qualifiers. The event starts with a 750 metre swim, followed by a 20 kilometre bike ride and finishes with a 5 kilometre run.

In the event, Ben came second out of the 50 competitors in the Under 23 category, and finished fifth place overall out of the 625 entries. As a result, he has qualified to compete at the World Under 20 Triathlon Championships in Canada in August 2020.

Ben’s House Parent, Hugo Battersby, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and Ben deserves great credit. He maintains an incredible training regime which includes him being in the swimming pool at 5am every Monday morning. All the boys at Linton House will be cheering him on next year and, just as importantly, supporting him in his preparations in the run-up to the Championships.”

Ben is not the first St Peter’s triathlete to achieve sporting success. In 2017 Old Peterite Sam Dickinson was selected as one of only three young athletes to be included in the British Triathlon World Class Performance Programme and later went on to win silver in the 2018 under 23 elite race at the ITU (International Triathlon Union) World Championships in Australia.
