A solar powered car which completed the 3000km World Solar Challenge in Australia has gone on display in York.

The car, which is made from a carbon-fibre monocoque, was designed by student society Durham University Electric Motorsport (DUEM) and visited St Peter’s School as part of the public lecture programme.

Blood, Sweat and Carbon

DUEM met with pupils and staff to explore the car before team principal and Old Peterite Oliver Headlam-Morley delivered a lecture to around 250 York residents, entitled ‘Blood, Sweat and Carbon – A Solar Challenge’.

The lecture explored the team’s experiences in the World Solar Challenge, the engineering complexities involved in building the vehicle, and the team’s future ambitions.

David Morris, Head of Science at St Peter’s School, said: “It was fantastic to welcome Oliver back to St Peter’s and to meet Durham University Electric Motorsport and see the car they have built. The students do everything, including designing the car and approaching companies for sponsorship, which is very impressive. The lecture was thoroughly engaging and provided an excellent overview of the challenges they faced crossing the Australian Outback. We look forward to following their future endeavours.”

DUEM was founded in 2002 and from its creation has been designing solar powered cars.
