Theatre should take risks, play with strange ideas, experiment with new techniques.

Benedict Nightingale, The Times, August 2008

At St Peter’s, we place a firm emphasis on contemporary theatre. We work hard to develop a firm foundation of 21st century critical theatrical thinking, challenging audiences wherever possible and encouraging a clear sense of dramatic discernment. At the heart of the drama curriculum throughout the school is an emphasis on devising new and original work. After every performance we hold a post-show discussion which allows audiences to question the cast about the work they have seen.

Public performances of student work usually take place at the end of the Spring term. Students also have an opportunity to attend the week-long National Student Drama Festival during the Easter holidays and regular trips to the professional theatre are undertaken throughout the rest of the year.

GCSE Drama follows a similar pattern of practical work and written theatre criticism to A level Theatre Studies. Regular public performances of student work occur throughout the year and each year group will experience a number of professional live performances during the course.

Pupils with an interest in lighting, sound and stage design can also choose to study Technical Theatre as part of their GCSE.

Sixth Form

A Level Drama and Theatre Studies combines practical experience of theatre with written analysis of text, genre and performance. This course offers the opportunity for those genuinely interested in the world of drama to develop their knowledge and understanding of modern theatre, whilst at the same time working towards a mainstream qualification accepted by all universities.
