St Peter's 13-18
Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.
The main aims of our Mathematics courses are to enable students to develop their understanding of mathematical principles and their interest in the subject.
Although a number will go on to further study of Mathematics, the majority will need to acquire skills and techniques which they can apply with confidence to problem solving and in other subjects.
Pupils work towards Edexcel’s IGCSE and they are placed in sets to enable them to work at a pace suited to their ability. The assessment consists of two equally weighted written examination papers which are taken by all students at the end of their Fifth Form. There is no coursework for IGCSE.
The Sixth Form
The Sixth Form follow the Edexcel A Level Specification. This course comprises two thirds Pure and one third Applied Mathematics and is assessed at the end of the course through the equally weighted examination papers.
A Further Mathematics A level course is also offered, which comprises 50 per cent Further Pure Mathematics and 50 per cent Further Applied Mathematics. There are four equally weighted terminal exams.
A Level Mathematics is of benefit in a wide variety of disciplines and could be taken alongside Geography, Economics, Business Studies or Biology, as well as the more predictable areas of Physics and Chemistry.
Many pupils throughout the School are entered for the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Intermediate and Senior Mathematics Challenges, and those who perform well are invited to take part in the Mathematical Olympiad. Each year the school also enters teams for the National Team Challenges. An Internal Maths Challenge is set each term, with a prize awarded for the best solution. There are also opportunities for students to attend external mathematical lectures.
