Modern Foreign Languages

Stpeters27thSept 17Despite the national decline in the study of modern languages, at St Peter's we still have significant numbers of our pupils who choose to read languages at university.

Among the combinations they have chosen to study in the past are French and Spanish, Modern Languages and Business, Law with German, French and Politics, Russian with Spanish and French with Arabic at universities including Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews, Durham and Manchester.

The knowledge of foreign languages helps to promote cultural, educational and technical cooperation among nations. That’s why one of the characteristic features of life in our country today should be to develop a great interest in the study of foreign languages.

Speaking more than one language is a skill which will radically increase your marketability as universities and employers tend to be impressed with candidates who speak one or more foreign language. In the modern world the study of language has become more of a necessity due to the fact that the global economy depends on communication.

Lower School Languages

A new curriculum was introduced in September 2009 and will work through from St Peter's 8-13. Pupils may choose any combination of French, German or Spanish, studying two languages to the end of Third Form (Year 9). They may then choose to drop one of the languages or continue with both.

iGCSE  All Languages

The aim of the Cambridge International IGCSE is to develop an ability to use the language for purposes of practical communication and also allows pupils to focus on the production of spontaneous, concise and accurate language. St Peter’s MFL department strongly believes that this course is conducive to creative and engaging teaching and learning which prepares students well, not only for the IGCSE, but also for further study of language into the Sixth Form.

Sixth Form

The AQA specification is used. In both the AS and A2, communication and comprehension are stressed and written accuracy is a major element in our integrated study of language skills.

French, German and Spanish study trips are organised for pupils in the Fifth and Sixth Form. The pupils have the experience of living with a family and also have the benefit of participating in language classes to work on their particular linguistic problems while they are there. The other beauty of these trips is that we can change location each year to give returning students an overview of the different regions of the country visited.

We also welcome visitors to the school throughout the year for fun and educational workshops and activities, such as salsa dancing and sampling cuisine.

The department also boasts a wide range of books, magazines, and DVDs which the pupils are encouraged to borrow. For help with specific language practice, pupils can also access the department’s website to further their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar here.
