The Music School includes three full-time and around 30 part-time staff who teach all orchestral instruments, piano, organ, singing, classical guitar, electric and bass guitar, percussion and drum kit.
The Music School has 19 teaching/practice rooms containing pianos, a Recital Room and a Recording Studio with mixing equipment and a portastudio.
The GCSE course follows the AQA syllabus and covers performing, composition (a coursework portfolio) and preparation for a listening test. GCSE Music involves a wide variety of musical styles which has made it a popular choice.
Music is available at A Level in the Sixth Form. The AQA syllabus is followed for this course which includes aural, composing/harmony, music history and performing. A number of pupils go on to study music at university, with academic places being won at Cambridge, Oxford, Durham, Manchester and London in recent years, with pupils achieving organ and choral scholarships into these institutions. Pupils have also been accepted onto the undergraduate performing course at the RAM, RCM and RNCM in the same period.
The objective is to ensure that music touches the lives of as many pupils as possible. As such, there are many opportunities for pupils to perform and participate in the numerous school music groups which feature large and small choirs; barbershop groups for girls and boys; a symphonic wind band and a swing band; a full symphony orchestra; various pop groups; brass ensemble, wind groups, string quartets, piano trios and other chamber groups.
School musicians have unique opportunities to perform in York Minster, as well as the School Chapel, Memorial Hall and Recital Room, because of close links between the School and the Minster.
Regular visits to professional concerts in such venues as York University and Opera North in Leeds are organised. Major tours abroad are undertaken biennially.
