Visitors Explore the Wonders of the Universe

Stargazing Live (1)

On Wednesday evening St Peter’s School welcomed visitors to experience the wonders of the Universe at our popular Stargazing Live event.

Exhibitors, including the University of York and the Institute of Physics came to St Peter’s to showcase a variety of scientific experiments and exhibits. Amongst the exhibitions was the  popular Cosmodome, which took visitors on a tour of the solar system and beyond.

York Astronomical Society provided an impressive array of telescopes to give visitors the opportunity for a glimpse into the far reaches of space, with thanks to the clear skies that Wednesday night brought.

Stargazing Live (2)The evening concluded with an exploration on the origins of the Universe by cosmologist Professor Joseph Silk from Johns Hopkins University. In his talk, Professor Silk explored some of the theories that explain how the Universe originated, by looking at some of the earliest observations of the cosmos through to some of the most up to date research.

Andy Parr, Head of Science Outreach at St Peter’s, said: “It has been fantastic to welcome people from all over the region to this year’s event. We’re really grateful to all the exhibitors and York Astronomical Society, who introduced so many young minds to the wonders of science, and of course to Professor Silk for travelling from his home in Paris to deliver an excellent talk on Cosmology.”
