A team of U14 hockey girls from St Peter’s School, York, have been ranked 5th in the country after representing the North of England in the Investec Girls’ Schools Tier 1 National Hockey Championships on Tuesday 25 February.

The girls travelled to the Olympic Park, London, for the competition, which was held at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. The girls secured their place in the finals as North Champions after beating Sedbergh in the regional semi-finals and The Grammar School at Leeds in the regional final in December.

The competition featured 8 teams from across the country and the U14 girls from St Peter’s School played three games throughout the day, winning 1–0 against Loughborough High School, drawing 2–2 with Framlingham and losing 2–0 to Kingston Grammar School. The girls from St Peter’s School finished 5th in the country, and Kingston Grammar School were the eventual overall winners.

Helen Barnard, Head of Girls’ Sport at St Peter’s School, said: ‘Reaching the finals of the National Hockey Championships and finishing 5th in the country is an absolutely outstanding achievement. Our girls have trained incredibly hard and we are very proud of everything they have achieved with their coach Mrs Brough, who has supported them throughout their journey.’

Jeremy Walker, Head Master at St Peter’s School, said: ‘I am so proud of the girls and their coaches and congratulate them on this fantastic achievement. It is wonderful to see our U14 girls’ hockey team achieving at the very highest level in the national finals. At St Peter’s School we encourage children of all ages and abilities to participate in sport, with 15 sports available and over 250 teams. The recent success of our girls’ hockey team demonstrates St Peter’s School’s reputation for producing competitive teams and home-grown talent across a range of sports.’

There are ten girls’ hockey teams at St Peter’s School, with provision and training available for girls aged 13 - 18. This is the second team from St Peter’s School to have reached the national finals as North Champions, following in the footsteps of the U18s in 2017/2018.
