Rate My Apprenticeship Award

The Careers Department at St Peter’s School, York, has been shortlisted for the Rate My Apprenticeship Awards 2020, for Outstanding Contribution to Apprenticeships.

The Careers Department was nominated for its Apprenticeship Evenings, which aim to raise awareness of apprenticeship opportunities and encourage more pupils to consider this route following their time at school. The Apprenticeship Evenings at St Peter’s began four years ago in response to the rapidly growing number of apprenticeships available across the country.

The Apprenticeship Evenings have always been successful and each one has been fully booked. The evenings are open to state schools across the city of York and about half of the attendees each year come from schools other than St Peter’s, reflecting the School’s commitment to supporting the local community.

Apprenticeship schemes offer young people the opportunity to begin work and earn a salary, whilst simultaneously getting an education - paid for by their employer. As an alternative to university, the benefits of taking this route are becoming increasingly clear. Not only does the apprentice gain a wealth of work experience from day one but, through a degree apprenticeship route, they also finish with a degree under their belt without having to pay student fees.

Joy Loftus, Head of Careers and Higher Education, said: “I am extremely proud that we have been shortlisted for this award. Apprenticeships are a fantastic route for young people to consider. It is only when armed with knowledge, information and advice that our pupils can make an empowered decision about their future. University is not the only option, and it isn't for everyone.

“Our Apprenticeship Evenings and other Careers events equip our pupils and parents with the knowledge to make the right decision for them. We are so pleased that we can provide not only our own pupils and parents with this opportunity, but that we are also able to inform and encourage those from other schools in our region.

“My heartfelt thanks go to my wonderful colleagues, both in school and from the companies with whom we partner, who make this event possible each year.”

The Careers Department at St Peter’s School provides support and guidance for all pupils aged 13-18 who are considering their next steps in life. They assist with work experience placements, university and apprenticeship applications, and gap year advice. They also organise careers talks and events throughout the year.

The nomination will be presented to an independent judging panel who will review all entries and the winner will be announced at the virtual Rate My Apprenticeship Awards which will be held on Thursday 20 August 2020.
