Year Three went on a very exciting trip to Tropical World today to complement their learning theme for this term: rainforests. They enjoyed a morning of interactive, hands-on workshops led by a zoo education team followed by self-led Tropical World tours.

The workshops explored how animals are suited to their environment by looking at a range of habitats. Pupils compared our native forests with rainforests including the animals, plants and resources. They drew inspiration from their key words for this term including deforestation, ecosystems, endangered and adaptation. Mrs Miss Murray said ‘it’s surprising how much they pick up in five weeks!’. The pupils were keen to share their knowledge with the zoo education team at Tropical World who were very impressed.

The children learnt lots of interesting facts in the workshop sessions including the fact that Leeds has 65cm of rain a year, whereas the rainforest has on average 250cm of rain a year. However, the bad weather didn’t dampen the Clifton pupil’s spirits or their eagerness to learn.

When asked if they knew what palm oil is one boy proudly called out “yes! But my mum doesn’t use it anymore!” The topic of plastic was also discussed and all children were proud to show off their re-usable plastic water bottles which were introduced earlier this term.

After their workshop session pupils explored Tropical World, all borrowing Miss Platts iPad to capture photos of their favourite animals. Pupils were helping their friends by lifting each other to get the best view of all the amazing animals. The monkeys and meerkats were a firm favourite among the children. We wouldn’t have been surprised if a meerkat had followed us back to St Peter’s in a pupil’s backpack!

A few quotes from the children:

  • It was amazing!
  • It was brilliant, the crocodile was massive!
  • I liked the  tarantula!
  • We saw caterpillars and butterflies.
  • I liked the colourful birds
