Music for Youth

The St Olave’s Mini-Jazz Band and string quartet attended the regional festival of Music for Youth in Hull, performing a set of around 10 minutes each to a capacity audience.

The festival adjudicators were full of praise for the two groups, noting the rarity of the string quartet and championing its inclusion in the festival. The Mini-Jazz Band’s rhythm section was especially noted as being a highlight, as was the improvisation that was displayed by every member of the band. The pupils also benefitted from experiencing an eclectic range of performances from other bands ranging from samba bands to jazz orchestras, choirs and even a 30-piece beginner year 4 brass band!

This was a good opportunity to showcase the St Olave’s music department outside of the school, and also to benefit from the wealth of music-making that is happening in its many forms all around the region.

Many thanks to Dr Iain Harrison, Head of Instrumental Music, for this report.
