Rugby at St Olave's School












St Olave’s School has hosted the annual HMC U11 rugby sevens tournament.

The competition pitted schools from across the north of England against each other in four groups before moving to a knockout format.

Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield, Birkdale, Hymers College, and King’s Hawford topped their groups before QEGS, Wakefield and Birkdale faced each other in the final.

After an impressive performance, QEGS, Wakefield, beat off competition from Birkdale to win the final 25-0 with several well-taken tries.

Gareth Sharp, organiser of the event and PE teacher at St Olave’s School, said: “It has been a fantastic day of rugby sevens; the weather allowed for some free-flowing and creative play from all the schools. My thanks go to all our referees who let the matches flow and to the other members of the school whose help and organisation allowed the day to run so smoothly. Congratulations to QEGS, Wakefield, for their cup victory – they played some fantastic rugby.  We look forward to welcoming everyone again next year.”

The teams involved in the competition included Ashville College, Barlborough Hall, Barnard Castle, Birkdale, Brontë House, Dame Allan’s, The Grammar School at Leeds, Hymers College, King’s Hawford, Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Wakefield, Royal Grammar School Newcastle and St Olave’s School.
