The House System

In Pastoral

The House System in St Peter's 2-8

When entering Reception, each child is placed in a House named after a gateway to the city of York: Walmgate, Micklegate or Monk. House points are awarded in lessons for hard work, House Captains are selected on a termly basis, and the children enjoy Inter-House competitions including Sports Day and the Swimming Gala.

The House structure prepares pupils for life at St Peter’s 8-13 and St Peter’s 13-18, fostering friendly competition and a sense of community.

The House System in St Peter's 8-13

There are five houses each with around 70 pupils across the age range in each. Our House and mentoring system, along with our ‘Seven Values’ framework, means your child’s happiness and wellbeing is at the heart of what we do.

Our boarders in Wentworth House each belong to one of the five-day houses so there is a complete integration of boarding and day pupils in school activities.

The House System in St Peter's 13-18

Pupils starting at St Peter's 13-18 will be placed in a House, either day or boarding. Our six Day Houses are Clifton, The Grove, Hope, Queen’s, School House and Temple. Our four Boarding Houses are Linton, The Manor, Dronfield and The Rise.

The House is the pupil’s base for spending free time (e.g. break and lunchtime), for registering, and for keeping books and equipment. They are warm and comfortable places but they are not insular; pupils can of course visit friends in other Houses. Siblings will usually be placed in the same House.

The Housemaster/mistress deals with all day to day matters and oversees a pupil's progress and welfare throughout their time at St Peter’s School. Each pupil is under the guidance of a Tutor who monitors academic progress and pastoral matters.
