St Peter's 13-18
Music has a strong reputation at St Peter’s and plays an important part in school life. The Music School, which enjoys a central location on our campus, is well-equipped to cater for all needs and offers excellent facilities for teaching, ensemble work and solo practice.
With 13 teaching spaces including our central Recital Room and newly refurbished recording studio, the department is always a hive of activity.
We offer a broad ensemble programme from small, instrument-specific chamber groups such as our Clarinet Choir or String Quartets to larger ensembles like the Wind Band or School Choir, which anyone is welcome to join.
Singing is central to what we do and in addition to the School Choir, we run a Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir and both Boys’ and Girls’ Barbershop groups.
The programme is designed to suit those new to music and wanting to play for fun, and the more advanced players who we often take to national competitions.
Music is a great way for pupils to express themselves and helps to build communication and confidence as well as supportive friendships. Pupils can also choose to access music individually through our one-to-one instrumental and singing lessons and we have a specialist team of 25 visiting teachers who tailor each lesson to the pupil’s requirements and goals.
In addition to excellent facilities, we offer enriching opportunities for our pupils through our concert programme, which not only allows regular performance opportunities in school, but also large-scale productions in York Minster, cathedral visits across the country and a biennial international music tour.
