Old Peterites Charity

This weekend we were looking forward to the Tour De Yorkshire passing the School once again- instead we can share the plans of one Old Peterite who has committed himself to a cycle challenge that will raise thousands for cancer and mental health charities this summer.

Toby left St Peter’s in 2014 and after studying Materials Engineering at Imperial College, now works for Bain and Co, one of the top management consultancy firms in London. Toby is taking advantage of the ability to take several weeks off work and has set himself an exciting personal challenge, having caught the cycling bug after buying a bike with his first pay cheque!

Initially Toby had planned to cycle the White Rose of Yorkshire to the Black Sea and Asia, a total of 4,400 kilometres this Summer. Toby has had to reorganise his route due to the pandemic but is happy that visiting National Parks around the UK, offers numerous additional benefits including; friends and family being able to join him for various legs of the journey and utilising friends and family for occasional sleepovers. This will mean Toby doesn’t always need to use the tent he will be taking and can earn some well-deserved rest in a proper bed from time to time.

Toby will start his journey on the 1st June and has a 40-day window to compete his challenge, with an aim to be cycling through York on 9th July to coincide with his sister (and Head Girl) Hope’s final day at St Peter’s. He will then cycle back over the Yorkshire Moors that evening, ready for his grandparent’s Diamond Wedding Anniversary on 10th July.

Toby is completing this for two charities that are very close to the family, The Walk and Talk Trust, a new charity that offers support of mental and physical wellbeing for children in deprived areas in the North of England, where Old Peterite Philippa (2016) is also currently volunteering. The second charity is The Eve Appeal, a charity that provides funding for important studies at The BRCA Protect Research Clinic on the prediction and prevention of early onset genetic cancers, something that has affected the extended family.

In a rash moment, Toby pledged to grow a moustache until the end of the ride if he hit the £1,000 mark, so he’s stuck with getting hairier the further he goes! Toby is delighted this challenge will help raise awareness and much needed funds for both of these very worthwhile charities.

Toby aims to raise £1 for every kilometre he will be cycling from June to July, to donate please visit: www.virginmoneygiving.com/yorkshire2asia You can also follow his journey on Instagram @yorkshire2asia.

We look forward to capturing that all important picture on the penultimate day on the 9th July when Toby cycles through York!
