Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund

This morning, representatives for Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund collected their cheque from 8-13. Last year, the charity were selected because their work has directly helped pupils in our community. They have hugely benefitted from the charity’s efforts and so St Peter’s felt it was important to give back. The school rose £7673.33 through events such as their second hand book sale, grab a jar sale and the J5 Enterprise Project.

The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund wanted to thank everyone who got involved:

We are so incredibly grateful to everyone that’s got involved with St Peters 8-13 fundraising in support of CHSF. These donations will help us to continue our vital work supporting babies, children and adults affected by CHD. This year alone we have supported over 150 families by offering emotional, financial and practical support from our family support workers. We have also given out almost 200 Katie Bears and medals to children who have undergone open heart surgery for their bravery and resilience. With your support, we will be able to continue to help more families in need and continue supporting hearts for life – Thank you.”

The pupils loved meeting a life-size version of the Katie Bear who gratefully accepted the cheque and will deliver support to those who need it most.

Pupils will soon be invited to vote on the school’s charity of choice this year.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Today, St Peter’s pupils and staff wore pink to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Head of School, Minnie, spoke in assembly this morning to tell her mother’s story of fighting Breast Cancer. She described her mum’s diagnosis and how she had a full mastectomy whilst balancing four children and a full time job. She emphasised the importance of checking for lumps, no matter how big or small, in breast tissue and how breast cancer can affect men too. A shocking statistic that 1 in 39 will die from Breast Cancer was shared, but that in the last forty years chances of survival have doubled.

The Brilliant Breakfasts

At the end of last week, both St Peter’s 8-13 and St Peter’s 13-18 held their own Brilliant Breakfasts for parents and pupils at drop-off.

On Friday, pupils at 8-13 sold croissants and coffee in the main reception, much to the delight of parents on the early school run. The following day, St Peter’s Sixth Form pupils organised a similar breakfast for the parents at 13-18. Between the two events, St Peter’s was able to raise over £580!

The aim of the Brilliant Breakfast campaign is to raise funds to support young women live, learn and earn. Money goes to The Price’s trust charity, which helps disadvantaged young women get into work, education or training which can help them turn their lives around.
