On Monday, St Peter's MFL department's annual Sixth Form linguists' Debating Competition once again showcased the best of languages in action. We were proud to host a record 37 teams from schools across the region, creating a vibrant, energetic atmosphere filled with intellectual challenge, friendly rivalry and a shared enthusiasm for languages.

Debating entirely in French, German and Spanish, teams worked collaboratively to research ideas and shape arguments. This teamwork was evident throughout the day as pupils tackled ambitious and topical motions, including mobile phone use for under‑16s, whether travelling is the best way to learn about other cultures and the role of art and literature in a world increasingly driven by science and technology. These debates demanded fluency, critical thinking, careful listening and the confidence to respond under pressure in another language.

St Peter’s entered seven teams. We are proud of how hard all of them worked to prepare and perform on the day and we are delighted that the German team of Helena and Ruby and the Spanish team of Anna and Olivia reached the semi‑finals and the French team of Annie-Mae and Sophie and the Spanish team of Ollie and Zara progressed to the final. The judges praised the exceptionally high standard, ultimately naming our Spanish team as overall winners, with the French team finishing a very close second after a lengthy deliberation.

What made the day truly special was seeing pupils grow in confidence with each debate - voices became stronger and arguments sharper. Alongside the healthy collegiate rivalry, pupils valued the opportunity to meet and network with linguists from other schools, united by a passion for languages and ideas.

The teachers are proud of every pupil who took part and pupils should be proud of themselves whatever the result. The competition highlighted the myriad skills gained through language learning: teamwork, resilience, confidence, cultural awareness and effective communication. We value the opportunity to host and welcome linguists from across the region, it was a fantastic day for the competitors and a true celebration of languages.
