Monday was an exciting day at St Peter's for our Girls U18 Cricket who were joined by a special guest opponent, Marylebone Cricket Club!
Our new Sport Pavilion made a great backdrop for the day's activities and the weather held out for a nice day of cricket. Head of Cricket, Mr Sharp, had some insightful reflections on the importance of the occasion.
"Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) was founded in 1787 as was the governing body of cricket and its laws from 1788 until 1989.
Women’s cricket is soaring in popularity, and as the sport continues to grow across the world, MCC recognises that work still needs to be done with regards to gender equality within our sport. MCC’s strategy has the promotion and support of women's and girls' involvement in cricket as a key priority; not just in a playing capacity, but also in terms of administration and the gender diversification of MCC's workforce and membership. Another major aim is opening the pathway in both professional and grassroots women's cricket and has been an important target area for MCC. MCC believe that by combining an increase in the amount of women's cricket played with efforts to increase girls' participation in youth cricket, the Club has a big part to play in the future involvement of women and girls within our sport.
This game marks a historic moment in the girls’ cricket programme at St Peter’s, and in the North of England. We are proud to have been able to host the inaugural game in our region. The day I am sure marks the start of many more memorable occasions for all our girls involved in the game now and in the future.
St Peter’s lost to a very competitive MCC side by 56 runs; taking away several learning opportunities both on and off the field, and as is the MCC way; the game was played in the correct spirit.".
