Looking Back - St Peter’s School Remembrance Memorial

in 2022, St Peter’s School unveiled a powerful new Remembrance Memorial to mark the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War and to honour the service of Old Peterites across all branches of the military. The project began in 2020, when students were tasked with designing a new memorial for the campus as part of the Remembrance Day observances. The winning design, created by students Hannah and Hope, features a series of silhouette sculptures that represent military personnel from different eras and services.

The sculptures, created by a team of talented MAKERSPACE students, are now positioned around the school campus, offering a reflective experience for the entire school community. The figures include a Falklands Marine, a WWI Trench Leaper, a Modern Medic, a Female Soldier, a Gurkha, a North Atlantic Convoy Serviceman, a Modern RAF Pilot, an RAF Groundcrew member, and a WWII Fighter Pilot. Each figure is designed to honour the diverse roles within the forces, past and present.

The memorial project was a collaboration between students, staff, alumni, and local partners. George, an A-Level Product Design student, played a pivotal role in designing the Falklands Marine figure and helping shape the project. Other students contributed to various figures, including Oaken, who designed the Trench Leaper, and Melissa, who designed the Modern Medic. The project was also supported by Old Peterites, including Harry Gration, former Old Peterite President, who praised the students for their talent and dedication.

Through this memorial, St Peter’s continues its tradition of honouring those who have served in the forces, while also offering a lasting tribute to the Old Peterites who have made sacrifices for their country. The figures will serve as a poignant reminder for generations to come.
