Pupil Grace recently represented the school in the National Gallery Articulation Competition regional final. The competition saw pupils from a nonmember of schools compete at the Laing Gallery in Newcastle. Grace spoke with passion and enthusiasm about Maggi Hambling's work 'A Sculpture for Mary Wollstonecraft'. The judge, Mr George Vasey commented:
"The talk was full of personality, and I loved the use of humour. It felt very journalistic in its delivery, with complex ideas rendered concisely and compellingly. I loved how Grace brought in reviews of the work to make a point about broader social misogyny. Grace had great pacing and delivery, and the talk was well-researched, with effective use of quotes to contextualise her key arguments."
Grace visited the work in half term and was able to show a first-hand appreciation of the sculpture, as well as exploring a family connection to Hambling, who is a friend of Grace's grandfather. Grace now becomes a member of the National Gallery Articulation Alumni alongside other St Peter's A Level History of Art pupils from previous years. As such, she will have the chance to engage with talks and events hosted by the National Gallery. Well done!
